Dutch badminton men take second place at European Team Championships

European Team Championships 2020

From Tuesday 11 to Sunday, February 16, the European Team Championships took place in Liévin (France). The Dutch badminton men’s team, including Robin Tabeling, has delivered a unique performance. They became second!

The championship started with a group stage against Slovakia, Luxembourg and Lithuania. These three matches were won with 5-0. On to the quarter finals! On Friday, February 14, the Netherlands (placed 6th) played against England (placed 2nd).

Here they provided the first stunt during the tournament. The Dutch won this match with 3-2! Winning this game meant at least a bronze medal for Team NL. But this was not enough for the Dutch..

In the semi-final, the Netherlands took on France (placed 3rd). This match was thrilling right up to the last point. In the third game of the last double, the Dutch were already at match point on 20-14, but the French came back to 20-18. The Dutch scored the last point and won the third game with 21-18 (see video). France lost with 3-2. On to the final!

On Sunday, February 16, the Netherlands played against Denmark, who were placed first. The Danes managed to get a 3-0 lead, which meant that the last two matches didn’t have to be played any more and Denmark went home with the title.

Losing against Denmark is no shame, the Danes have won the last 7 editions of the European Championship. All results of the European Championship can be viewed via BWF.

We want to congratulate the Dutch badminton players with this great performance!
